There's this religion. It stems from Arab lands. Spreading to other parts of the world. The name Muhammad is common among them. They are a big topic on both mainstream and social media. Terms like barbaric, oppressed and terrorists are used to describe it. The women here dress modestly, what a bore? Alcohol and other intoxicating drinks are prohibited. I wonder how they turn up? . Early marriages are very much encouraged. Their men grow out their beards, not the trendy Tyler Perry cuts no, just a long unkempt bush. Such renegades! Let me not get started on their eating habits? Who still eats with their hands? They are alleged to be behind many terrorist attacks, the 911 included. The children mostly young boys are indoctrinated into terrorist groups like Al Qaeda at a young age. All in the name of Jihad, whatever that is.

Islam.

It is the fastest-growing religion in the world. In Europe, this religion has garnered more reverts than any other part of the world. I wonder who in their right mind frame would want to be part of this madness?

The religion has a set of rules. Active members both men and women are to pray five times a day, fast during the Holy month Ramadhan, give Zakat and most importantly accept the shahada. This religion follows a strict code of shariah laws. The laws dictate the different ways of human interaction. The religion itself is a lifestyle. It entwines itself with day to day lives. From food to money everything should be halal. This group of people has its own banking system. “Halal banking” that’s what they call it. It is devoid of interest. Could we talk about their food? spicey as hell.

I have been an active subscriber of the said madness for the last five years. Islam to me came by chance and choice. Chance having been born into a Muslim family and by choice having accepted to practice it on my own volition. Islam to me means a lot of things. The first being peace. It is a peaceful religion. One that has been very influential in the individual I am today. It is a religion that promotes harmony and love. It has made me aware of other people and their needs. The fasting during the holy month of Ramadhan brings with it so much meekness. The atmosphere transforms with everyone preparing for one of the most important times of the year for Muslims. Not to mention the pilgrimage in Mecca.

The adhan. When I hear the beautiful sounds of the Adhan, the call to prayer, reverberating throughout the city, I’m filled with tranquility. The Qur’an which has been ripped apart by the media is a source of inspiration for me. I enjoy being part of this umbrella.

So yes. I ‘m part of these people.
