She slowly tiptoed to the kitchen. She had to eat fro in Suhoor there’s a blessing that she wasn’t going to miss it. She had been on it for two years now and no one suspected. She had joined the terrorists as her ignorant mom would refer to the men with long beards and women who dressed in all black. She had taken the shahada and was now a Muslimah.

She is now a muslimah.

Subhanallah! She had mistakenly stepped on Sandy the cat and Lord did she let out a loud meow. Her mother who is a light sleeper would be in the kitchen any minute now. Her secret was out. What would she say she was looking for in the kitchen at four in the morning? How does she explain that she finally understands herself? That she found the meaning of life in the depths of alcohol and other drugs. Will the mother who is a staunch Christian understand that sometimes one has to colour out of the line to get the right picture. That things are not always as they seem. Her head was not in the right place for a very long time until she heard her Pakistani roommate pray when it all made sense. She experienced a tranquil like never before.

How would she paint the picture to her? Would she accept her new name, Aisha? Would she still associate with her? Was their relationship going to change? How was she to explain that she’d her changed her dressing code and adorned the hijab full time? “Terry, what are you doing up at this time and what is that your wearing?” Her secret was out. She stood there staring at her mom. This woman who slaved all her life because of her. The woman who wanted nothing but the best for her. The two of them had come a long way since her dad eloped with his secretary. The incident had taken a toll on her mother and now she felt like she had betrayed her. Just as her father had.

“Why are you all covered up?” she asked.“I reverted to Islam mom”

She stared back at her in disbelief…

To be continued.
