MY SGR EXPERIENCE

I’m living the life I wanted. The life I deserve, the life that I have painfully saved for the past 8 months, the life that to some might seem basic but to this 22-year-old is worth it. I have left a heart on too many girls and boys posts with the hashtag vacation. The posts would outlay the beautiful sandy beaches that, to be honest, got me thinking, how do I get there. What do I have to do for me to actually take myself on a vacation? The answer was simple, get a sugar daddy or work hard and save towards the goal. You guessed right, I saved up for this.

SGR Mombasa terminus.

I woke up early enough to get to the train station, having been brought up in the countryside shags as most Kenyans refer to it, I had only seen trains on TV. I had never been on one but this changed a few days ago. I hopped into a cab and 25 minutes later the female guard at the station was busy rubbing the machine against my body. Was she too vigorous for a hijabi or was it my imagination?, I’ll let you be the judge of that. The sniffing dogs did their thing and in no time I was getting my ticket. I took the escalators instead of the stairs and just 6 minutes before the departure I was seated next to the window ready for my adventure.

At exactly 8.00 a.m the train slowly but surely left the station, meandering through the railway as we left Nairobi behind. The journey for me was bittersweet for me. I got the chance to experience the beauty that is our country and also reflect on the year that has been. The highs, the lows and everything in between.

Since I booked the inter-county train, we meandered stopping on every station as more customers filled the different cabins until when we got to Mombasa. I disembarked excited and ready for my holiday only to be hit by a major heatwave. Did I really think that I’d be at the coast without the heat?
