IF WISHES WERE HORSES.

If wishes were horses then beggars like me would ride on them. I would not be salivating at the idea of walking outside briskly without masks or itchy palms that reacting to cheap sanitizers. If they were then I would slowly start packing for pilgrimage. Why? because the holy month is here and al s Muslim who yearns for a chance in Mecca her time would have come. If wishes were horses my government would have treated COVID-19 with the urgency it deserved. It would have graduated from a white people disease that area affecting individuals across the pond to a virus that anyone can catch.

I know of a talented author in the country. One who has shaped the swahili lingo having been an avid writer for different coursebooks. He did not have to die the way he did. His would have been a different case not only because of his status and contribution to society but also because he is human. This should have been motivation enough. But it wasn't and a widow somewhere is mourning her husband, whom she did not have the decency to attend the burial. Why? because of the lockdown. My other wish was for better healthcare. A healthcare system that is guaranteed to work. A system that will not discriminate between persons instead it is a system that will be driven by passion and compassion more than profits.

I’d then wish for leaders of sound mind. Who rule for the people. Whos personal gains do not push them to the embezzlement of public resources. Leaders who will ensure that their people are catered for to the core. Leaders who don't wait for a pandemic for them to rise up to the occasion.Leaders who don’t have to bribe their way into office. Leaders who respect themselves enough to accept the people's choice in the ballot. But hey these are just wishes, right?
